Police release victims’ identities following fatal M239 crash

NEW BUFFALO TOWNSHIP, Mich.—One person has died and one person remains in critical condition following a crash on May 11 on M-239, police said Wednesday.

According to the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office, three vehicles were involved in a crash on Saturday around 3:53 p.m.

During their investigation, officers found that a Honda CRV crossed the center line on M-239 just south of Wilson Road and collided with two vehicles, a Nissan Rogue and a Toyota Sequoia.

The driver of the CRV, Sabrina Stewart, 21, of LaPorte, and the driver of the Sequoia, Jose Flores, 40, of Elkhart, are both stable and were treated for their injuries.

There were no injuries in the Rogue.

There were four passengers in the Sequoia, one who is now deceased and three who were injured.

The deceased passenger has been identified as Raymundo Sanchez, 18, of Elkhart.

Raymundo’s grandfather, Jose Salazar, 61, also of Elkhart, remains in critical condition.

Jose’s wife and Raymundo’s grandmother, Maria Ontiveros-Vazquez, 61, and her daughter, Mayra Salazar-Ontiveros, 37, both passengers, also of Elkhart, have improved to stable condition.

The crash is under investigation by the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.
