UPDATE: Driver arrested on warrant for deadly Mayflower Road crash
UPDATE TWO: St. Joseph County court notes state 63-year-old John Kurt Collings was arrested Thursday night on his arrest warrant.
UPDATE: Friday, Nov. 14, the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office has charged 63-year-old John Kurt Collings of South Bend on three counts in correlation with the Wednesday crash.
Collings is charged with:
- Causing Death When Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, a Level 4 Felony
- Causing Serious Bodily Injury When Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, a Level 5 Felony
- Reckless Homicide, a Level 5 Felony
The State has also sought a sentencing enhancement for Collings being a habitual vehicle substance offender.
Collings is currently not in custody, but has a warrant issued for his arrest.
ORIGINAL STORY: ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office announced the St. Joseph County Fatal Crash Team is investigating a two-vehicle crash which occurred around 10:16 p.m., Wednesday.
Police responded to a crash involving a pickup truck and SUV on Mayflower Road near Belleville Drive, in South Bend.
Authorities arrived to find the drivers of both vehicles and one passenger were severely injured.
The St. Joseph County FACT team was then activated.
The preliminary investigation determined the SUV, driven by a 48-year-old South Bend woman, had just exited the bypass traveling north on Mayflower Road.
Police say the pickup truck, driven by 63-year-old John K. Collings of South Bend, was traveling south on Mayflower Road before crossing into the northbound lanes near Belleville Drive.
The vehicles then collided head-on.
A passenger, identified as 58-year-old James L. Barnes of South Bend, was critically injured.
All three individuals were taken to the hospital.
Barnes has since died from injuries sustained in the crash.
Visitation for Barnes will be Friday, Nov. 28, at Wells and Cruz Family Funeral Home at 503 W. 3rd St. in Mishawaka from 4 to 7 p.m.
The crash remains under investigation.
