Palisades contractor falls into pool above nuclear reactor

COVERT, Mich. -- A spokesperson for Holtec Palisades Nuclear Power Plant confirmed to ABC57 that a Palisades contractor performing work inside the containment building fell into a pool of water above the nuclear reactor.
The contractor was wearing all required protective gear, including a life vest, a standard when working near the pool without a barrier.
The worker was assisted from the pool, evaluated, monitored, and decontaminated for removable contamination per industry standards and safety procedures.
"Radiological assessments are ongoing and are expected to confirm exposure well below regulatory and administrative dose limits," according to the Holtec spokesperson.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission was also notified.
The spokesperson added that a review of human performance factors contributing to the incident is underway.
The contractor suffered minor injuries and has returned to work.
