Opt-out option for Michigan automatic voter registration officially in place

ABC 57

LANSING, Mich. -- A significant change in Michigan's voter registration laws is officially in place.

Today, June 1, is the first day of the opt-out option for the state's automatic voter registration system. Under this updated process, eligible Michigan residents will still automatically be registered to vote when they get or renew a driver's license or state ID. The Michigan Department of State will then send newly registered voters a confirmation letter in the mail, along with a form to mail back to opt out. The letter will also include a prepaid envelope.

Automatic voter registration was voted into the state constitution in 2018. Michigan's primary election is happening Tuesday, August 4. Election Day is November 3.
