LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- A Flock Safety camera captured an image of a gray Mazda CX-5 that was stolen out of Benton Harbor late Thursday night in La Porte County, resulting in a vehicle pursuit through the City of La Porte.

The La Porte County Sheriff's Office was notified around 11:50 p.m. on Feb. 6 of the stolen Mazda in the area of S.R. 39 and the Indiana Toll Road (I-80/90).

A LCSO Deputy located the car heading south on Indiana Avenue (U.S. 35) traveling southbound on Indiana Avenue (US 35) and activated emergency lights to initial a stop. That is when, authorities say, the driver of the Mazda sped away, resulting in a chase that "traveled along several city streets within La Porte."

"In the area of Andrew Avenue and 19th Street, two male subjects exited and fled from the vehicle on foot," the LCSO said.

At the same time, the pursuing deputy noticed the Mazda was still rolling forward and he was able to successfully stop it, preventing any property damage or injuries to the public.

The passenger of the stolen Mazda was identified as 28-year-old Courtney M. Williams, of Benton Harbor. He was located and arrested in the 1300 west block of 18th Street.

Authorities say the driver of the car, who reportedly goes by "TayTay," escaped.

Williams was transported to the La Porte County Jail on charges of:

  • Assisting a Criminal, L6 Felony
  • Resisting Law Enforcement, A-Misdemeanor
