One killed after vehicle leaves roadway, striking tree

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- County police responded to a report of a single-vehicle cash on Quince Road Saturday around 6:20 p.m.

Officers found an SUV engulfed in flames upon arrival that had left the roadway and struck a tree.

A witness said the vehicle was headed northbound on Quince Road when it veered off the roadway in the curve, hitting the tree head-on before eventually igniting.

Police say bystanders tried to get the driver out of the vehicle but were unable to before the fire started.

Officers confirm the driver, identified as 33-year-old Jeffrey Allen Young, was killed in the crash.

Speed is initially believed to be a primary factor in the crash and toxicology reports are pending.

Traffic investigators with the county police department are handling the investigation.
