Officials release personnel file of officer involved in fatal crash

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The personnel file of South Bend Police Patrolman Justin Gorny has been released in response to a public records request from ABC57.

On July 20, 2018, Patrolman Gorny was traveling eastbound on Western Avenue with his lights activated when his patrol vehicle struck an SUV driven by 22-year-old Erica Flores who was northbound on Kaley. Flores died in the crash.

A grand jury reviewed the case and did not indict Gorny.

Officials released his 12-page personnel file on Tuesday in response to our request.

The file contains a letter dated November 15, 2017, informing Patrolman Gorny his promotion from the rank of Patrolman 2nd class to Patrolman 1st class was approved by the Board of Public Safety.

His file also includes certificates for completing a standardized field sobriety testing course, drug identification course, law enforcement training and CPR training.

Two diplomas are included in the file. Gorny graduated from New Prairie High School in May 2008 and Indiana State University in May 2013.

Also included in the file is a job description.
