Officers with Elkhart Police Department receive life-saving medals
ELKHART, Ind. -- Six officers with the Elkhart Police Department were awarded life-saving medals at the Police Merit Commission Meeting Monday.
City officials say though some of the officers have already been recognized for their actions through commendations or media recognition, the officers officially received their life-saving medals at the meeting in front of fellow officers, Mayor Rod Roberson, and their families.
Cpl. Brandon Stevens received his medal for performing life-saving assistance on a Turkey Stampede run participant in 2022.
Cpl. Gavin Headley, Cpl. Bryce Moore, and Cpl. Nathaneal Eddy, received their medals for running into a house fire and helping citizens escape in the 200 block of Jefferson Street in March 2023.
Cpl. Nathanial Toth, Cpl. Headley, and Chaplain Marti Cerda received their medals for making connections with and talking down a youth having a mental health crisis.
City officials say the awards recognize the officers for acting without regard to their own public safety, for rushing in to aid those in need, and for the life-saving impact of their actions.
