OBGYN department closing at Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center Plymouth
PLYMOUTH, Ind.-- Saint Joseph Health System (SJHS) is closing its New Beginnings Birth Center in Plymouth and the Marshall County Obstetrics and Gynecology office.
Plymouth Mayor Mark Senter said the news was a surprise.
“I guess the most disappointing part is the lack of communications they have with county and city leaders,” Senter said.
SJHS released the following statement to ABC57 News:
At Saint Joseph Health System we are committed to fulfilling our mission to serve as a compassionate and transforming healing presence in our communities. Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we have yet to successfully attract an obstetrician to serve the needs of our patients in Marshall County.
As a result, we have made the difficult decision to close the Plymouth Medical Center New Beginnings Birthplace for the foreseeable future beginning April 30, 2023. We will continue to perform deliveries at the Mishawaka Medical Center Family Birthplace.
The Marshall County Obstetrics/Gynecology office will also close on March 31, 2023. Saint Joseph Health System has multiple healthcare professionals specializing in primary care and family medicine who will continue to provide excellent prenatal and gynecological care in Marshall County.
The OBGYN office is closing on March 31 followed by the birth center closing on April 30.
“I feel for our citizens, I feel for the women who are having children and don’t have this advantage anymore in our community,” Senter said.
Senter said he worries about what else could be next.
“That hospital has been part of this community for 30 years,” Senter said. “It just hurts to know they’re doing this to us. They took our intensive care away back maybe a few months ago, now this? We don’t know what’s next and I just wish they would communicate better with us.”
