2024 has been a very active storm year for Michiana, with multiple tornadoes and rounds of severe weather.
This year has also been busy in terms of celestial sights, with the total solar eclipse back in April and now multiple sightings of the Northern Lights.
While those parts of the atmosphere are not related, a strange pattern has emerged this year, especially in southwest Michigan.
Less than a week after an EF-2 tornado has hit Saint Joseph County, Michigan, the aurora borealis has emerged across Michiana.
The first time this happened was on May 7, with a twister damaging the Colon area. Three days later, a strong G4 geomagnetic storm made viewing the Northern Lights possible all through Michiana.
Then, on August 6, another powerful EF-2 tornado damaged structures near Three Rivers. Six days later, the aurora borealis made an appearance once again.
There is another chance to see the Northern Lights Monday night into Tuesday morning, along with the Perseid Meteor shower. This time around, tornadoes are NOT in the forecast.
