No charges to be filed in fatal crash involving Benton Harbor City Commissioner

Ron Singleton

BENTON HARBOR, Mich. -- The Berrien County Prosecutor's Office announced on Feb. 15 that no charges will be filed in a crash that left 74-year-old Helen Johnson dead after being hit by a car on Sept. 23, 2024.

The driver of that car, Benton Harbor City Commissioner Ron Singleton, has been cleared of any wrongdoing, according to Berrien County Prosecutor Amy Byrd.

Singleton told authorities he saw Johnson in the road in front of him but couldn't avoid her due to a vehicle in the other lane.

Documents state Singleton submitted to a blood test for alcohol and other intoxicants with results showing no substances in his blood stream at the time of the incident.
