New video shows the day that left one officer injured and a suspect with gunshot wounds
BENTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- ABC57 obtained police body-cam footage from the March 27 police involved shooting that left one officer injured and the suspect with two gunshot wounds.
The incident that happened over six months ago started around 1:30 p.m. when two officers, one with Michigan State Police, and one from the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety, pulled over a car for a traffic stop.
After speaking with the driver, now identified by the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office as Raymone Hayden, the officers learned he was wanted on a federal warrant for absconding.
The body cam footage also shows the officers accusing Hayden of providing false identification, before they attempt to remove him from the car.
The video shows a verbal back and forth between Hayden and officers as they begin to open the driver side door. That’s when Hayden puts the car into reverse and drives, catching the Benton Harbor officer with the door and slamming him into another vehicle, injuring the officer’s leg.
In quick response, the Michigan State Police officer draws his weapon and opens fire on Hayden, hitting him twice.
The video goes on to show more officers arriving on scene, instructing Hayden and the two other passengers in the car to crawl out.
Once Hayden was out of the car and on the ground, officers immediately gave him first aid, before arresting him and transporting him to the hospital, then jail later on.
Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office told ABC57 Hayden is currently pending sentencing, but has pled guilty to fleeing and eluding, as well as resisting and obstructing a police officer causing serious impairment. The injured officer is now back at work.
