National New York Central Railroad Museum in Elkhart unveils revitalized attraction, offers free rides
ELKHART, Ind. - The National New York Central Railroad Museum announced the revitalization of the NIBCO Century Flyer, a historic amusement train ride.
There will be a two-day celebration with free Flyer rides on June 14 and 15, open to the public.
The NIBCO Century Flyer is a two-foot narrow gauge locomotive with three passenger cars.
Museum officials say these smaller trains were made by the National Amusement Devices Co. of Dayton, Ohio, built from the 1940s to the 1960s.
The trains were very popular at theme parks and zoos and very few of these trains have survived in full running condition.
The revitalization project included replacing all ties, lengthening the track 700 feet, a new sidewalk/passenger loading area, new Station House, mechanical and cosmetic restoration of the locomotive and three cars, installation of a crossing signal light, installation of a main track signal light, re-locating appropriate railroad signage, and Flyer grounds prepared for new landscaping.
Museum officials say this will also help increase the educational opportunities for kids and adults that climb aboard.
Flyer ride times will be 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. each day of the celebration.
The museum will celebrate with surprises for children and offer free rides for those two days only with paid museum admission.
“We are fortunate to have this important piece of Americana history,” said National New York Central Railroad Museum Director Brent Holaway. “This is one of the largest projects taken on by the Museum in several years. Donations by local corporations and private individuals made this all possible. Thanks to them, we have a most unique and enjoyable addition of the NIBCO Century Flyer for our museum visitors. The NYCRR Museum is one of those downtown Elkhart gem attractions that is fun for the whole family.”
The museum plans for the NIBCO Century Flyer to run most Fridays and Saturdays, but large groups may be accommodated by request on other days.
The National New York Central Railroad Museum located at 721 S Main St. in downtown Elkhart and is open Wednesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
