Multiple fire departments respond to Berrien County house fire Sunday morning
BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety reports they responded to a garage fire in the 1500 block of Johnson Avenue in Benton Harbor around 4:48 a.m. Sunday, to assist the Benton Charter Township Fire Department.
While enroute, a BHPS officer on scene advised crews that the fire was spreading into the residence.
Firefighters arrived and found heavy fire in the garage with possible fire in the home's attic.
Crews say the interior of the home suffered smoke and water damage throughout.
The homeowner stated he was working on a wall in his garage when he needed to refuel his turbo heater with kerosene.
He said while refilling the heater the kerosene ignited and spread to the other combustible material throughout the garage.
The report states that when the fire started, the homeowner went back into the house to get everyone out.
The homeowner's son then called 911 and during this time the homeowner went back into the home to get his dogs out.
After saving the dogs the homeowner said he tried to go back in for their cat, but stated it was too hot and smoky to go back inside the home.
BHPS crews found the cat dead during the overhaul.
The St. Joseph Department of Public Safety and Sodus Fire Department were also called to the scene to provide mutual aid.
Fire officials say the fire was under control in 30 minutes and there were no injuries.
