Mount Baldy access site reopens after 27,000 tons of sand moved

National Park Service / K. George

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- Indiana Dunes National Park is reopening the Mount Baldy access site Monday, following the completion of a sand relocation project.

Only the Mount Baldy access site, which includes the parking area and beach access route, is open.

Other areas, such as Mount Baldy's summit and dune face, will remain closed due to safety concerns like unstable sand conditions. The park asks visitors to stay on designated routes and follow posted closures.

This reopening comes after the US Army Corps of Engineers moved roughly 27,000 tons of sand to manage the shoreline, address sand accumulation around visitor infrastructure, and return sand to Lake Michigan's beach system.

Indiana Dunes National Park will keep monitoring slope stability and response along the new dune face to inform future management decisions at Mount Baldy, like changes to access, visitor safety measures, and long-term site stewardship.
