Mishawaka High School to host Special Olympics Unified Champions Day event

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- The School City of Mishawaka announced Mishawaka High School will host the annual Special Olympics Unified Champions Day on Thursday from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Steele Stadium.
Organizers say the event is a celebration of inclusion and student achievement through the Unified Champion Schools program.
The event brings together over 100 student-athletes in grades K–12 from across Mishawaka for a day of track and field competition.
The public is invited to attend the free event, and no tickets are required.
Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood, Mishawaka Parks Superintendent Phil Blasko, and U93’s Big Perm, who will serve as emcee, will all be there.
Organizers say the event was made possible by volunteers and staff through a partnership with Special Olympics Indiana.
The Unified Champion Schools program promotes meaningful social inclusion by bringing together students with and without intellectual disabilities through sports, inclusive student clubs, school-wide activities, and youth leadership opportunities.
“SCM has proudly participated in Special Olympics Unified events since 2017. These experiences foster collaboration, respect, and inclusion for all learners,” said Matthew Johns, Director of Exceptional Learners. “Our athletes have trained since January, and this culminating event is a celebration of their hard work. Unified Champions Day is a powerful reminder of how far we’ve come—and the work still ahead—to grow the Inclusion Revolution. At School City of Mishawaka, we choose to include.”
The morning will kick off at 9 a.m. at Steele Stadium with a Torch Run, group photo, and parade of athletes.
The event will continue until around 11:30 a.m., featuring students from seven elementary schools and John Young Middle School.
