Two teens arrested for firing guns out Michigan City apartment window

Ryder Lechtanski, Lennon Houghtaling

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- An alert from Flock Raven gunshot detection system led Michigan City Police to arrest two teenagers on charges of felony Criminal Recklessness earlier this week.

Authorities say they were alerted around 12:34 a.m. on June 1 to a shot being fired near 403 Chicago Street.

The first officer to arrive on scene noticed a green laser coming from the upper window of 401 Chicago Apt. 2.

"The laser was consistent with being a laser gun sight and soon after seeing it, a gunshot was fired out of the same window which was directly above him," the MCPD said.

"A perimeter was immediately set up around the building."

At that point, the SWAT team was contacted, and a search warrant was issued for the apartment.

"Tactical entry was made into the apartment and the scene was safely secured by SWAT," the MCPD said.

"The apartment was searched and interviews with the occupants took place. Two handguns, with one having a green laser sight, and two rifles were recovered along with ammunition."

Police say 19-year-old Lennon Houghtaling, who lives at the apartment, and 18-year-old Ryder Lechtanski, also of Michigan City, were responsible for the gunshots.

Both were arrested and taken to the La Porte County Jail and a $15,000 cash bond was set for both Houghtaling and Lechtanski.
