ABC 57

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- The Michigan City Police Department and Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch have each released a statement regarding a video currently circulating social media which depicts a traffic stop from February 2024.

The video shows an officer saying the driver's tag was covered which was one of the reasons leading to the initial stop. Police say they pulled him over because he disregarded a stop sign.

MCD released the following statement about the incident:

"The Michigan City Police Department is aware of a video currently circulating on YouTube and other social media platforms that depicts an interaction involving our officers during a traffic stop. We are currently looking into the matter and are committed to addressing the situation with transparency and professionalism. As this is a personnel matter, we are unable to provide any further comment until a thorough review has been completed. We appreciate your understanding."

Mayor Angie Nelson Deuitch released the following statement:

"The City of Michigan City is aware of a video circulating online showing a traffic stop that occurred in February 2024. The interaction did not result in an arrest, only a written warning. No constitutional rights were violated, and no complaints were filed; but outside groups are now circulating the video and misrepresenting the situation.

I want to be clear: I fully support the men and women of the Michigan City Police Department, who work tirelessly each day to keep our community safe. At the same time, I recognize that moments such as this - regardless of how or when they surface - are opportunities for us to listen, reflect, and continue to grow as a department and as a city.

Our officers face difficult and often stressful situations. While the language in this particular exchange was strong, it did not rise to a violation of rights or policy. Nevertheless, we will continue to use incidents like this as part of our ongoing efforts to train, improve communication, and strengthen trust between law enforcement and the community we serve.

Michigan City remains committed to fairness, professionalism, and accountability in public safety. We encourage residents with concerns to engage directly with our office or the Police Department so that we can address issues constructively, rather than through anonymous or misleading channels."
