La Porte County Jail

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. -- A man is facing a list of 10 charges after allegedly interfering with a crash scene, assaulting an officer, and threatening harm against them and other officers Friday, July 3.

The 31-year-old John Isbell is charged with Battery Against a Public Safety Official, Intimidation committed because of victim's occupation, and Criminal Confinement as Level 6 Felonies.

Isbell is also charged with Resisting Law Enforcement, Obstructing an Emergency, Obstructing a Firefighter, Public Intoxication, Criminal Vandalism, Disorderly Conduct, and Unlawful Encroachment on a Law Enforcement Officer as misdemeanors.

Around 10:30 p.m. Friday, July 3, officers were at the scene of two crashes around E. 10th Street and E. Michigan Boulevard when a large crowd formed to watch crews perform life-saving measures on the crash victims.

Isbell allegedly walked with and slightly grabbed onto one member of the Michigan City Fire Department, distracting him from his work, after which one officer tapped Isbell on the shoulder and went to tell him to give the crews space to work.

According to the officer, who also stated that they had been involved in another incident where Isbell resisted arrest, Isbell turned around and shoved them backwards.

The officer activated a taser in response and wrapped an arm around Isbell to pull him away. Isbell them allegedly grabbed onto the officer's arms and squeezed their wrists so the officer couldn't break free.

The officer managed to fire the taser into Isbell's leg to loosen his grip and get off another taser shot, sending him to the ground. Officers placed Isbell in handcuffs and set him in a police car.

Isbell was taken to a local hospital and then booked at the La Porte County Jail. On the way, Isbell allegedly made several threats, both against the specific officer and other officers, including how he would harass officers every day and use less-lethal pepper ball guns on them.

Isbell's initial hearing was on Monday. He does not yet have a future court date set.
