Membrane roof failure at Elkhart Wastewater Treatment Plant causes loud explosion

City of Elkhart ELKHART, Ind. -- At approximately 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, the membrane roof of Digester Building Three at the Elkhart Wastewater Treatment Plant on Nappanee Street failed and ruptured, causing a loud bang.
Digester Building Three is one of three digesters where methane gas is processed.
No injuries were reported.
The Elkhart Fire Department and the Department of Public Works have confirmed there are no safety or health concerns for the public.
Wastewater operations and treatment will continue as usual with minimal interruption.
