Man sentenced for 2022 crash that left 58-year-old dead

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Court documents state Seth Jason Becker was sentenced on Tuesday after being found guilty but mentally ill regarding the July 2022 crash that left 58-year-old Janeth Gomez dead in South Bend.

Becker was originally charged with one count of reckless homicide, one count of criminal recklessness, and four counts of reckless driving.

Becker was sentenced to four and a half years for Reckless Homicide def. recklessly kills another human being, one and a half years for Criminal Recklessness committed with a deadly weapon, and one year for Reckless Driving causing bodily injury.

Becker has 720 days credited and the sentences are consecutive.

On Tuesday, July 26, 2022, at around 8:49 p.m., police were called to the intersection of Ewing Avenue and Taylor Street for a crash.

According to investigators, Becker was involved in an encounter one block north of the intersection before the crash.

Becker disregarded a stop sign at Ewing Avenue while going around 50 to 60 miles per hour heading south on Taylor Street.

He then hit a Dodge Durango, driven by Gomez, which then hit a third vehicle travelling east on Ewing Avenue.
