Man four times legal alcohol limit charged with several counts of OWI following crash

LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- A probable cause affidavit obtained from the La Porte County Superior Court revealed a suspect appeared in court Tuesday for OWI charges stemming from a head-on collision between two vehicles on June 4.
Documents state emergency first responders arrived in the area of US 35 and Johnson Road for a two-vehicle head-on crash around 8:45 p.m.
One of the drivers, identified as Nathaniel Greene, was found be lethargic and not alert.
La Porte County sheriff's deputies on scene say Greene displayed poor manual dexterity while trying to retrieve his ID.
The other driver was found on the ground next to his vehicle. That man told first responders he was in extreme pain and believed he'd broken a rib. The driver was also actively regurgitating due to the pain he was in.
The second driver was given medical treatment in an ambulance on scene.
Greene was asked to step out of his vehicle after refusing medical treatment.
Authorities say several empty alcoholic beverage containers were located on the driver's side floor and under the seat.
When deputies asked Greene how much he had to drink, he stated, "A lot."
When answering questions, deputies say Greene’s speech was lethargic and slurred.
Greene was then read Indiana Implied Consent to which he refused. Greene was handcuffed behind his back and was searched.
Deputies say they found an opened miniature bottle of liquor in his pocket during the search.
Through witnesses' statements and the injured driver's statements, it was determined Greene didn't have headlights on and crossed the center line, causing the head-on crash.
Greene was then taken to Northwest Health La Porte for medical clearance to file for a search warrant for his blood alcohol level.
Just before 10 p.m., the authorities received a signed copy of the search warrant and blood samples were drawn.
The results from the hospital found that Greene's BAC was 0.364 mg/dL (legal limit is 0.08).
While awaiting medical clearance, hospital staff informed deputies that Greene was being transferred to South Bend Memorial due to injuries he sustained in the crash.
Greene is charged with Causing Serious Bodily Injury when Operating a Motor Vehicle with an ACE of .08 or more, a Level 5 Felony, Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated: Prior Conviction Within 7 Years, a Level 6 Felony, Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person, a Misdemeanor, Oper Veh w/ Alcohol Concentration Equivalent to .15 or More, a Misdemeanor, and Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated, a Misdemeanor.
Greene will be back in court on July 18.
