ABC 57

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- The Van Buren County Sheriff's Office reports deputies responded to the 74000 block of C.R. 687 in Keeler Township around 1:50 a.m. Friday for reports of a man screaming.

The report states deputies arrived to find a vehicle that had gone off the roadway.

Deputies say they found a man in the driver's seat slumped over the steering wheel and after several attempts to wake the man, he finally acknowledged the deputies.

The driver was identified as a 27-year-old Pullman, Mich. man.

While speaking to the man, deputies noticed two children in the back seat.

The children, a 3 and 5-year-old, were asleep at the time of the deputies' arrival.

The report noted that the extreme wind chill was hovering around zero degrees at the time.

Deputies say they then asked the driver about the broken window on the vehicle to which the driver stated he broke it because he lost his keys.

Authorities say they noticed signs of intoxication from the driver, and he was asked to exit the car.

Through their investigation, deputies learned the man was traveling from Lawrence to Pullman, but the report notes he was heading in the wrong direction.

The driver was then taken into custody for OWI and Child Endangerment.

He was taken to the VanBuren County Jail.

The children were taken to the sheriff's office where they were cared for until family arrived to pick them up.

This report was referred to CPS and has been submitted to the Van Buren County Prosector's Office for review.

Authorities say this investigation remains open at this time.
