Man arrested after breaking into Tippecanoe Place, found drinking beer and cooking
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend Police Department officers responded to a call at Tippecanoe Place on July 6 of a man who had broken into the restaurant and made himself at home, cooking a sandwich and pouring a pitcher of beer.
Responding officers spoke with Chef Mark Lofton, who says he had left the restaurant at 10:45 p.m. the previous night and had locked the doors and set the alarm.
When he arrived the next morning at 7:45 a.m., he found the doors were locked, but the alarm had been disabled and two broken windows.
When he entered, he found a man in the kitchen, later identified as Scott Allen Mangus.
He was barefoot, covered in a blanket, and holding a pitcher of beer.
Mangus was a former employee.
He made himself pulled pork from the restaurant's supply and a pan was found on stove.
When police found Mangus behind the bar, yelling to himself, he told officers he owned the building, and it was his house.
He claimed that someone named "Poo" had stolen his shoes.
Mangus claims he broke into the restaurant, "because the key was not under the mat."
He also was found to have taken a Tippecanoe Place hat.
He faces one count of felony Burglary and one count of misdemeanor theft.
