Elkhart Police Department ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- A man has been charged with a hit-and-run crash while drunk in Elkhart County.
The 31-year-old Travis Truex was charged with Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated Endangering a Person, Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Operating a Vehicle with an ACE of .08 or More as misdemeanors.
According to the Probable Cause Affidavit, an officer on patrol responded to a hit and run on Sunday, Feb. 22 around 12:58 a.m. where the victim claimed that they had been struck by a white GMC Terrain at the intersection of C.R. 6 and C.R. 17.
The officer says later he saw a Terrain matching that description that appeared to speed up upon seeing him, eventually driving at 60 MPH on a road with a posted 45 MPH speed limit. The officer began a traffic stop and spoke with the driver, Truex.
While Truex looked for his documents, the officer noted signs of possible intoxication, like "red and watery" eyes and a faint smell of alcohol. Truex later stated that he'd had three or four beers.
The officer also noted what appeared to be paint transfer marks and scrape marks on the Terrain consistent with the damage to the hit vehicle.
Truex claimed no knowledge of the damage to his vehicle and denied any knowledge of hitting another vehicle, though he did admit to driving at the intersection of C.R. 6 and C.R. 17.
Truex showed signs of intoxication through field sobriety tests and consented to a certified chemical test, which determined he had "the equivalent of .088 grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath" after he was taken to the Elkhart Police Department.
Truex's initial hearing has been scheduled for Friday.
