Macy's to close over 100 stores, UP Mall location will stay open

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- It is no secret that the online economy has not been good to malls and department stores. Once cultural consumer hubs, many malls around the country are failing, and with them, the big department stores that anchor them.

While the University Park Mall has been impacted by turnover of big-name stores in the past, at least one of those staples is here to stay for the foreseeable future.

ABC57 reached out to Macy's Inc. amidst the rumors of possible closings at the UP Mall, and they say that while they are closing over 100 stores, the UP Mall location will remain open.

"Our new strategy is designed to return Macy’s, Inc. to profitable growth and enhance the customer experience. We intend to close approximately 150 Macy’s stores over the next three years," Macy's representatives said. "This allows us to focus our investments and resources on Macy’s go-forward locations including full line, furniture and current off-mall locations and Bloomie’s, Bloomingdale’s The Outlet and Bluemercury stores.

"We look forward to continuing to serve our customers at Macy's University Park Mall."

Macy’s, Inc. will report its first quarter 2024 sales and earnings results on Tuesday, May 21 and the company will host a call and webcast with financial analysts and investors at 8 a.m. EDT.

The call will be hosted by Macy’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Tony Spring and Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer Adrian Mitchell.

The general public can access the live webcast and associated presentation via the company's website at www.macysinc.com.
