Local conservative group launches human trafficking awareness campaign
UPDATE: Congressman Tim Walberg's office was not able to provide a statement before this story aired but shared the following Monday evening:
“According to data released by the National Human Trafficking Hotline, hundreds of cases of human trafficking are identified annually in Michigan, often with multiple victims. While much work has been done to address this scourge on our society, we must continue to raise awareness and pursue efforts to better detect and prevent instances of human trafficking.”
ORIGINAL: NILES, Mich. -- In the midst of back-and-forth protests over the Trump administration in downtown Niles, a local conservative group has launched a campaign to raise awareness of human trafficking in the state of Michigan.
According to the Michigan Abolitionist Project, Michigan is the 12th worst state in the U.S. in terms of human trafficking and Berrien County ranks 15th of 83 counties in the state.
Campaign organizers claim that illegal immigration is partly to blame for human trafficking issues throughout the country.
They also pointed to Michigan's extensive highway system as an asset for human traffickers looking to quickly force unwilling people across borders and state lines.
Conservative leaders also led a pro-Trump rally Monday, praising his efforts to tighten border security.
Meanwhile, supporters for the Coalition 4 Democracy, rallied across the street for Due Process, a persons right for a fair trial. They emphasized the need for due process when dealing with immigrants especially.
