Local community members invited to Citizens Police Academies for inside look
Right now, registration is open for Citizens Police Academies at multiple local departments so you can take a seat and hear from officers.
The South Bend Police Department released a statement in their academy announcement saying, "Yep, we get a lot of feedback from our residents. And that's a good thing! So... why does the police department handle things the way it does?"
You can register fall classes here. At your Tuesday evening classes, you'll get a hands-on look at some their specialty units, including patrol, SWAT team, crime scene technician, Bomb Squad, K9 Unit, Narcotics Enforcement, Detective Bureau, communications, and more.
The academy runs August 13 to October 8. Classes are from 6 to 9 p.m. at the South Bend Police Department.
The Citizens Police Academy is open to anyone 18 and older with no prior felony convictions.
You also must be willing to have a criminal history check.
Space is limited and the registration deadline is August 1.
The La Porte County Sheriff's Office is also holding a Citizens Police Academy.
Authorities say this is a unique opportunity for community members to gain insight into law enforcement.
The interactive sessions will be led by experienced officers, covering police procedures, crime scene investigations, and community policing strategies.
Participants will also experience hands-on workshops and simulations.
Authorities say this program aims to deepen your understanding of law enforcement and strengthen community bonds.
You can apply for La Porte County, here.
This program will be Tuesday evenings from September 3 to October 8.
