UPDATE: SWAT Team responds to domestic disturbance call on Fremont Street after shots fired at police, investigation ongoing

ABC57

UPDATE: The Elkhart Police Department confirmed to ABC57 that Elkhart County Regional SWAT was called to a home in the 800 block of Fremont Street after police say a man inside fired a gun from the house while officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call Friday around 9:59 a.m.

The initial call reported a domestic disturbance involving a potentially armed individual.

When officers arrived on scene, they say a man inside the residence fired multiple shots from an upstairs window. One round struck an occupied Dodge Charger on the roadway outside the home.

The driver of the Charge was uninjured, and no other injuries were reported.

Two women and a child exited the home while police were on scene, with a young girl later exiting as well.

EPD then evacuated nearby homes out of caution.

Authorities say they were unable to definitively confirm whether the suspect had left the residence, so the Elkhart County Regional SWAT team was called in around 10:44 a.m. to assist with clearing the home and if there were any remaining injured individuals inside.

SWAT members called out to anyone who may have been inside before entering and clearing the house. No one else was located.

SWAT cleared the scene around 1:15 p.m., with Fremont Street being reopened shortly after.

EPD officers and technicians are processing the scene.

Police say the suspect has not been located at this time, and no arrests have been made.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the EPD at 574-295-7070 or Michiana Crime Stoppers at 574-288-STOP.
