La Porte man dies after construction accident in Elkhart Saturday
ELKHART, Ind. -- Authorities in Elkhart reporting one fatality from a construction work site accident that happened on Saturday at the Sunnyside Overpass project.
The decedent was 31-year-old Michael Knotts of La Porte. Knotts worked for Rieth Riley Construction and "was directing a pipe in the driver, when, for an unknown reason, the driver become disconnected striking and killing Knotts."
The Elkhart County Coroner reports the cause of death as Multiple Blunt Force Injuries and the manner of death as accidental.
The Sunnyside Overpass project involved the construction of a bridge to take traffic over S.R. 33 and the Norfolk Southern Railroad line, and down Sunnyside Avenue.
The Elkhart County Commissioners unanimously approved $12.5 million in funding for the project in February of 2024 and construction was scheduled to be completed by the summer of 2026.
The investigation into the incident is closed.
