La Porte County Sheriff’s Office shares rise in I.C.E. holds and detainers
LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. — La Porte County officials shared Monday the number of I.C.E. holds and detainers placed on inmates at the county jail with ABC57 News.
Since November of 2024, 76 La Porte county inmates have either been released to I.C.E. or transported to other counties for charges in those areas.
69 inmates have been directly released to I.C.E. in the past year. That’s compared to a total of seven inmates released to the agency between 2020 and 2024.
County Administrative Captain, Derek Allen, shared that the dramatic increase isn’t surprising, considering the Trump administration’s current focus on immigration control.
Allen also clarified that the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office hasn’t changed their policies or procedures; they’re still adhering to Indiana state law, and the rise in holds has come from changes in D.C.
Elkhart county officials also shared Monday that between January 1 and October 30, a total of 178 inmates had an I.C.E. hold or detainer placed on them. Of those 178, 145 were picked up by I.C.E.
