UPDATE: Two arrested in Michigan City regarding death of 5-year-old boy
LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- UPDATE: The Michigan City Police Department reports officers responded to a 911 call regarding an unresponsive 5-year-old boy on March 2 around 7:16 a.m.
Inside the apartment in the 2200 block of Normandy Drive, officers found 5-year-old Augustus Williams unresponsive.
With Williams, officers found his mother, 23-year-old Halie Lewis, and her boyfriend, 32-year-old Brice Bainum.
Williams was then taken to Franciscan Hospital and from there, flown to the University of Chicago Children’s Comer Hospital for advanced medical treatment.
The report states despite the efforts of first responders and medical professionals to save him, Williams passed away at 7:02 p.m.
The Investigative Division was called to the scene and on March 5, Williams' death was ruled a homicide by the Cook County, Ill. Medical Examiner.
After the medical examiner performed the autopsy, authorities were informed Williams had fatal head trauma with multiple impacts on the head.
Other injuries suffered include contusions on the scalp, subdural hematoma, diffuse subarachnoid hemorrhage, subdural hemorrhage, bruises/abrasions to buttocks and lower back, abrasions to upper and lower bilateral extremities, abrasion to right neck, and abrasion behind right ear.
On March 6 and 7, the investigation's results were presented to the La Porte County Prosecutor's Office for review and the filing of criminal charges.
On March 6, it was determined probable cause existed to formally charge Bainum with one count of Murder, a Felony, and one count of Interference with the Reporting of a Crime, a Class A Misdemeanor.
He was given a cash only bond of $1,000,000 and is currently being held at the La Porte County Jail pending his initial hearing.
On March 7, it was determined probable cause existed to formally charge Lewis with one count of Neglect of a Dependent Causing Death, a Level 1 Felony.
She was given a $100,000 cash only bond and is currently being held at the La Porte County Jail pending her initial hearing.

ORIGINAL STORY: Michigan City Police responded to a call of an unresponsive child in the 2200 block of Normandy Drive Sunday morning around 7:15 a.m.
The report states that officers arrived at the residence and found an unresponsive 5-year-old boy.
The boy was taken to Franciscan Hospital and was eventually flown to University of Chicago Comer Hospital for advanced medical treatment.
Despite lifesaving efforts, the boy passed away just after 7 p.m. that evening.
The report states the Investigative Division was summoned to the scene to take over the investigation.
Detectives then contacted the La Porte County Prosecutor’s Office to obtain a search warrant for the residence.
The search warrant was issued, the scene was processed, and evidence was collected.
