KNOX, Ind. -- The Knox City Police Department responded to the report of a mentally ill patient who had fled from the hospital earlier this evening.

Officers were then able to locate the individual at a McDonald's in the surrounding area.

During their encounter, the suspect attacked the responding officer, which prompted an 'Officer Down' call to dispatch.

Additional police units responded swiftly to the scene and the suspect was apprehended.

The injured officer was transported to the hospital for minor injuries.

This is an ongoing investigation.
