Juvenile injured in two-vehicle head-on collision

ELKHART, Ind. -- Deputies responded to the area of Ash Road on the bridge over the St. Joe River around 9:14 p.m. on Saturday in response to a two-vehicle crash, according to the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies determined that a 1999 Toyota 4 Runner, driven by a 17-year-old girl from Elkhart, was traveling north on Ash Road across the bridge at the time of the crash. Officials say that the car lost traction while traveling into the southbound lanes and collided headed-on with a 2017 Infinity Q50, driven by a 33-year-old from South Bend.

A 17-year-old passenger in the Toyota was ejected from the vehicle and suffered possible injuries to her head, neck and internal organs. She was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for treatment.

According to a press release from the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, the injured passenger was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
