SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- South Bend’s Public Works Department is bracing for cuts in budget for 2026, with officials pointing to revenue losses tied to Indiana’s Senate Bill One.
The Personnel and Finance Committee heard Monday that the department is considering a 15% program reduction, with a proposal to cut at least four full time positions.
Council members emphasized priorities for the Public Works department such as repairing streets and sidewalks, alley maintenance, and modernizing wastewater systems.
Water projects in particular will see more funding, including $5 million for lead service line removal. Officials say those utilities were less affected by Senate Bill One than road and engineering projects, which rely heavily on local income tax revenue.
The budget now heads to the full council.
