LA PORTE COUNTY, Ind. -- A 23-year-old is dead following a residential fire in the 2700 West block of County Road 1650 South near the unincorporated community of Hanna. 

Deputies with the La Porte County Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a fire around 12:08 a.m. Saturday. 

First responders were unable to safely get inside due to heavy smoke. 

Multiple agencies worked to put out the fire. 

23-year-old Kathryn M. Zabel was found inside the home and pronounced dead on the scene. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation. An investigator from the Indiana State Fire Marshals Office has responded to the scene as well.
