Stolen Halloween decorations returned to after community steps in
SOUTH BEND, Ind -- A South Bend family is getting its beloved Halloween decorations back after they were stolen from their yard. Calisa Doll-Jones, a self-described Halloween lover, has spent years creating a Halloween display at her home. But on the morning of Oct. 16, she and her husband woke up to find some of their favorite decorations missing. Doll-Jones said the decorations were more than just seasonal displays. They held sentimental value for the couple and represented years of tradition. “We were mad because we both work full time like everybody else, and this is a big deal,” Doll-Jones said. “These things are not cheap and we love them. They have sentimental value.” After discovering the theft, Doll-Jones posted on Facebook, hoping to discourage anyone from trying to resell the decorations on the platform. Instead, her post sparked an outpouring of support from the South Bend community. “I started getting all of these comments from the community about how much they love the decorations, they drive past our house just to see them,” Doll-Jones said. Among the missing decorations were the Pumpkin Ladies and Inferno Man. A community member recognized the decorations in another yard a few miles away, helping bring the items back to the family. Doll-Jones said the experience changed how she felt about the city after initially being upset by the theft. “I was mad at South Bend last week, but I love them all over again now,” she said. The decorations are being kept safely inside while the South Bend Police Department investigates. The family plans to bring them back out for trick-or-treat night. The police report was filed Oct. 16, and the decorations were safely returned to the family by police on Oct. 19.
