SOUTH BEND, Ind. - A troubling and potentially dangerous situation for a South Bend police officer took place on the west side of South Bend early Sunday morning.
An officer patrolling in his police cruiser on Western Avenue believes someone fired a shot in his direction, striking his vehicle.
Thankfully the only damage was to his police vehicle.
Officers set up a crime scene and talked to witnesses, even stopping an individual on the corner of Cherry Street and Western Avenue.
According to police, a person was detained at the scene and later released without charges.
Then about three hours later, the sound of gunfire again.
This caused officers still working the scene on Western Avenue to take cover.
One of our reporters was on the scene, hearing the gunshots himself.
According to South Bend Police, the two incidents are not related, and no officers were targeted that second time.
It is still unclear where the shots fired incident took place.
According to police, it has not been determined whether or not somebody actually fired a shot at the police cruiser.
