Indiana State Police trooper killed during pursuit
INDIANAPOLIS — An Indiana State Police trooper is dead following a crash in Hendricks County.
The crash happened around 8:30 p.m. on Ronald Reagan Parkway near Interstate 70.
This all started when troopers found a stolen car in Indianapolis. They attempted to stop the suspect, which led to a pursuit.
While setting out stop sticks to end the chase on Ronald Reagan Parkway, Indiana State Police trooper Aaron Smith, 33, was struck by the suspect’s vehicle.
The suspect then crashed nearby.
Smith was taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where he later died.
The driver of the suspect vehicle, 18-year-old Eddie Jones of Sikeston, Missouri, was preliminarily charged with murder.
A passenger, 19-year-old DeMareon Curry, also of Sikeston, was preliminarily charged with auto theft.
Police also discovered a 15-year-old in the vehicle who had been listed as a missing person from Missouri. She is not being charged.
Smith served with the Indiana State Police for nearly five years. He is survived by his wife.
“This is a tremendously sad day for the entire Indiana State Police family. We will band together as we always do in support of Trooper Smith's family, friends and co-workers”, said Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas G. Carter.
