PORTER COUNTY, Ind. -- On Sunday, Indiana Dunes National Park is inviting the public to come and hear stories and songs about Great Lakes shipwrecks and how treacherous the lake's waters can be, especially in the month of November.

From 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., guests can join a park ranger and musician Lee Murdock for a program and live concert called, “Gales of November – Great Lakes Shipwrecks.”

The educational program will focus on the historic shipwrecks of the Great Lakes and what makes the storms so sever in November.

"After the short program, join musician Lee Murdock as he entertains with ballads of contemporary commerce and revelry in the grand folk style," park officials said. "Lee’s songs about the Great Lakes find drama and inspiration in the lives of sailors and fishermen, lighthouse keepers, ghosts, shipwrecks, outlaws, and everyday heroes."

Park officials say there are approximately 6,000 shipwrecks throughout the Great Lakes, and many were never located.

"However, some wrecks, like that of the Muskegon, which is Indiana’s first shipwreck listed on the National Register of Historic Places, are located nearby," organizers said. "As a new state nature preserve, the Muskegon shipwreck site will be protected for generations to come."

The event will take place at the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center at 1215 North State Road 49, about one mile north of Interstate 94.

The event is funded by the Friends of Indiana Dunes.
