Elkhart Indiana Black Expo to host events for Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart Chapter of Indiana Black Expo announced the calendar of events for Martin Luther King Weekend which will kick off on Saturday.

On Saturday at 6 p.m., the chapter will host its annual Black and White Presidents Ball in Hotel Elkhart's ballroom.

Organizers say the ball will celebrate Elkhart County's 40 under 40 African American Rising Stars with a performance by Nathan Palmer.

Tickets are $60 each and are available online until Wednesday or until the event is sold out.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day at 8 a.m., there will be an MLK Prayer Breakfast and Open House at the Elkhart Public Library downtown with a community choir and local speakers.

At 9 a.m., IBE will lead its annual MLK Day March. Participants will meet at Elkhart Civic Plaza downtown at 9 a.m., with the march beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The march will head to Community Missionary Baptist Church at 228 Chapman Ave. for the annual MLK Program.

The program will include keynote speaker Elkhart High School graduate Dana Freeman.

Organizers say there will also be other special guest speakers including Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson.

Elkhart Chapter of IBE President Robert Taylor said the chapter will also celebrate the work and dedication of lifelong Elkhart resident Clyde Riley.

Riley will receive the Ben Barners Community Service Award.

Riley is the current Roosevelt Elementary School Assistant Principal, a retired park department superintendent, retired principal, and former director of the Tolson Center.

Taylor added that Riley’s dedication to people in the community, the City of Elkhart, and members of the Elkhart Chapter of Indiana Black Expo all played key roles in making this selection.

Lunch will be served following the program.
