Husband arrested in 2007 cold case following grand jury decision

St. Joseph County Prosecutor\'s Office: Lucio Lerma Sr.

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office announced a grand jury convened between March 16 and 19 to determine multiple cases, including the December 2007 death of Delia Lerma.

The grand jury was presented facts of the cold case and on March 19, after reviewing evidence and testimony, an indictment of Murder against Delia' husband, Lucio Lerma Sr., was returned.

Lucio was later arrested and arraigned in court on Monday.

At the arraignment a summary of the facts was presented to the Magistrate due to no formal probable cause affidavit existing since the case was presented to a grand jury.

The court determined Lucio is to be held without bond.

Lucio's next hearing is scheduled for April 6.

Delia's family has been notified of the grand jury's decision and Lucio's arrest.

The South Bend Police Department reports Delia was 33 when she was found dead in a van in the 2100 block of S. Carlisle Street in 2007.

Police say she'd been stabbed several times.

Days before she was found, Lucio had filed a missing person's report on Delia.

The case was initially investigated by St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit, before South Bend Police Cold Case Investigators reopened the case to pursue new leads.

Investigators then combed through files, documents, and physical evidence. Investigators also worked with an SBPD Crime Scene Technician to discuss how new technology could move the case forward.

Investigators then reinterviewed witnesses and people who previously had not come forward.

This led to SBPD partnering with "Cold Justice," a TV show, to shed some light on the case.

The episode aired in November 2025.
