Hispanic Community Child Safety Meeting: A Call To Action
ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Indiana Child Safety Campaign invited Hispanic youth, parents, guardians, educators, service providers, and community members together for a community conversation centered on listening, learning, and sharing experiences to help children thrive.
The gathering was hosted in collaboration with Rio's Rainbow, Parent Coalition for Child Safety & Wellness, Speak Our Truth Project, and community partners committed to advancing child safety and family well-being throughout Indiana.
The community created a welcoming space, where families could share their experiences, concerns, and ideas.
Lina Esquibel provided Spanish and English interpretation throughout the event to ensure all participants can fully engage in the conversation.
Esquibel also shared her story with child safety. "As a mom, I'm thinking back, why did I not go back and speak with the teachers? Why did I not go back and speak with the school, I only spoke to my son."
Esquibel's son was bullied back in school, but now the current state legislation, including SEA 283/TB3'S Law and HB 1483, mandates that schools are required to investigate all reports of bullying.
The gathering allowed opportunities for the public to chime in, and community member Ana Salazar didn't hold back.
"So, Latinos, it's time to wake up. It's time to wake up and be an advocate. Get rid of that fear," Salazar said.
The Indiana Child Safety Campaign has an ongoing petition to call upon Indiana lawmakers to declare a "Child State Emergency" to prioritize students' mental health and human rights.

"Como mamá, estoy pensando, ¿por qué no volví y hablé con los profesores?", dijo Esquibel. "¿Por qué no volví y hablé con la escuela, solo hablé con mi hijo?"
El hijo de Esquibel fue acosado en la escuela, pero ahora con la legislación estatal actual, incluyendo la Ley SEA 283/TB3 y la HB 1483, obliga a las escuelas a investigar todos los informes de acoso escolar.
La reunión permitió oportunidades para que el público interviniera, y la miembro de la comunidad Ana Salazar no se retuvo.
"Así que, latinos, es hora de despertar. Es hora de despertar y ser un defensor. Deshazte de ese miedo", dijo Salazar.
La Campaña de Seguridad Infantil de Indiana tiene una petición en curso para llamar a los legisladores de Indiana a declarar una "Emergencia del Estado Infantil" para priorizar la salud mental y los derechos humanos de los estudiantes.
