Temperatures soared into the middle 90s Monday afternoon across Michiana. However, with a persistent breeze and some well-timed clouds, the heat wasn't overwhelming for short periods of time.
Highs could head up a notch on Tuesday, however. Thermometer readings could encroach on the triple digits for the first time this year.
Temperatures rising to 100 degrees is rarer than you might think. South Bend's last taste of triple-digit heat came back in July 2012 (more than 4,400 days ago). When Michiana has seen temperatures of 100 degrees or more, it's usually been early in or in the middle of the summer. The last time we hit 100 degrees in August was more than 35 years ago, on August 1, 1988.
South Bend came inches away from hitting "the century mark" two years ago, when the high reached 99 on June 21, 2022.
If we do hit 100 on Tuesday, it will be the latest 100-degree day on record in South Bend.
No matter what the thermometer says Tuesday, it will still be dangerously hot across Michiana. Babies, young children and the elderly are especially susceptible to heat-related illnesses when the temperature/heat index approaches 100 degrees.
Highs should retreat into the 80s by Thursday.
