Heavy rain causes vehicle to hydroplane, crash Wednesday morning

MGN

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office responded to a single-vehicle crash Wednesday morning where the driver was sent to a local hospital after their 2004 Toyota Avalon hydroplaned and hit the median.

"[The Toyota] was traveling west on U.S. 20, east of the west county line in the right lane when it hydroplaned on the roadway during heavy rainfall," the ECSO said. "[The Toyota] struck the median and came to rest facing east in the right lane."

Authorities say another driver was heading east on U.S. 20 when they witnessed the crash. That driver turned around to provide assistance and remained on scene until authorities showed up.

The driver of the Toyota, a 32-year-old Niles woman, complained of neck pain from the impact and was transported to South Bend Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-incapacitating injuries.

The Toyota required towing as a result of damage.
