Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County kicks off Muffet McGraw Women Build Week

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Starting today and running through Saturday, a dedicated team of women will be coming together each day to work on building a home for a future homeowner.

This year marks the 15th home-building project for legendary Notre Dame basketball coach Muffet McGraw. She continues her mission to create affordable housing and uplift the lives of women and families in need.

The women build initiative brings together people from all walks of life to make a difference.

This year, the focus is on Terrie Dixon, a future homeowner who has completed over 250 hours of sweat equity as part of the Habitat for Humanity homeownership program.

"It really is about empowering yourself and having that sense of ownership. Being a homeowner, they're able to leverage that equity that they built in their home years from now. Helping Terrie have that dream fulfilled, that's great for us but it's really great for our whole community," Director of Community Relations at Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County Jill La Fountain said.

The Muffet McGraw Women Build isn’t just about putting up walls, it’s about laying the foundation for a better future.

Since 2001, Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County’s Women Build committee has been dedicated to ensuring everyone in our community has a place to live.

Through the Habit for Humanity Homeownership program, future homeowners are required to help build their homes alongside volunteers. They also attend workshops on budgeting and financial management to prepare them for long-term homeownership.

"We love having Muffet on the site. She's exciting, she's fun, she's ready to get down to work and ready to build this house. Muffet is a champion. She was champion as a coach. And now at here Women's Build, she champions Women's Build, and she gets people excited when they're out here on the build site," La Fountain said.
