Governor Mike Braun signs student cell phone ban into Indiana law
Unsplash INDIANAPOLIS -- On Wednesday, Indiana Governor Mike Braun ceremonially signed Senate Enrolled Act 78 (SEA 78) into law, formally restricting student's cell phone use during the school day.
With SEA 78's new 'bell-to-bell' restriction, Indiana students are not allowed to use cell phones, smartwatches, gaming devices, or other personal wireless communication devices during the school day.
SEA 78 includes exceptions to this cell phone restriction for emergencies, students with Individualized Education Programs or 504 plans, and medical needs.
Under SEA 78, Indiana schools must update their wireless communication device policies to limit student use of personal devices during the school day.
Indiana Department of Education must provide model policy language and implementation guidance for schools to assist in the update.
