GOSHEN, Ind. Some much-needed new affordable housing is now set to open in Goshen.
LaCasa Inc. has teamed up with Oaklawn and Bashor Children’s Home to bring the Lakeview Drive Apartments, a supportive community for people struggling with addiction, mental illness, and homelessness to life.
The development was made possible through funding from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA), the City of Goshen, Oaklawn, Bashor Children's Home, Community Foundation of Elkhart County and NeighborWorks America.
A total of seven buildings are planned for Oaklawn’s campus. The first three, offering 27 units, are nearing completion.
Community partners gathered in a warm new community room to celebrate Oaklawn’s latest housing development in nearly four decades.
Each building is designed for a different group. One offers affordable housing. Another provides supportive housing for adults in addiction recovery. The third is housing for young adults aging out of the foster care system, with services provided by Bashor Children’s Home and Oaklawn to help residents find stability.
LaCasa President and CEO Jeremy Stutsman, the former Goshen mayor, said the work is not done.
“We’re about to open 27 more units for 27 individuals and families. I’m really excited about that but there is a much larger need that we’re gonna continue working hard to fill every gap we possibly can create more housing,” Stutsman said.
LaCasa has not yet opened the leasing process. The first building is expected to open by the end of the year, with the next two coming online in the following months as construction begins on the remaining phases.
