ELKHART, Ind.---The Elkhart County League of Women Voters and the Elkhart Chapter of the NAACP held a candidate forum for the Elkhart Community Schools Board candidates on Tuesday night. Douglas Weaver, Casey Zitkus, and Dacey Davis all participated in the 90 minute forum.
"Between COVID-19 and the merger of our high schools, this is a precedent setting time for Elkhart Community Schools," said Ashley Moleyneaux, Executive Director of the Elkhart Education Foundation. "The next two years will be incredibly crucial for the overall success of ECS."
Weaver and Zitkus are bothe vying for the District C seat, while Davis is now running unopposed for the District D seat after Danny Brown announced he is dropping out of the race.
"Hopefully these new candidates will have some new ideas because, as I can see, a lot of them are much younger and are in tune with what the young kids need," said Ronnie Davis, President of the Elkhart NAACP.
Organizers of the forum are hoping voters are more educated and better equipped to vote for the candidates that best fit the needs for Elkhart Community Schools.
"Because it’s a nonpartisan race, you can’t just assume you know how a person will vote or act or think about a subject, so these forums are one of the only ways especially candidates who are not well know can get their ideas out on the table," said Moleyneaux.
