Former South Bend Police Department Chief passed away Friday

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Chief Darryl Boykins passed away peacefully on Friday, Dec. 13, surrounded by his daughters at the Ernestine Raclin House. He was 70 years old.

Darryl joined the South Bend Police Department in 1984 and was appointed to the role of Police Chief on December 21, 2007. He rose through the ranks as a K9 Handler, patrolman and detective lieutenant and was recognized as Officer of the year.

His involvement created many programs, the most notable being his work with the SBPD P.A.L program. He enjoyed drawing and worked as a sketch artist; his sketches were integral in solving many crimes.

He was determined to leave his community better than the condition he found it. His fortitude lives on in many young people and his values continue to make positive changes in those who knew him.

In keeping his family's wishes, private services are being planned.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the Boys and Girls Club, an organization he believed strongly in.

Online condolences to the family may be sent via the Palmer Funeral Homes website
